The Declaration of Independence was signed by congress in 1776. Slavery was legal for a further 90 years after this and sharecropping and the institutions that later replaced slavery have shaped a society that is still deeply unequal for black citizens.

Frederick Douglass was a former slave who later became a social-reformer. He wrote a famous speech called “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?“, which questions what exactly African Americans have to celebrate on Independence Day.
The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice are not enjoyed in common. The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence bequeathed by your fathers is shared by you, not by me [...] This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn.
